Checkups and Vet Services for Kittens and Young Cats

When you welcome a new kitten to your home, you anticipate lots of fun. But it’s also important to introduce healthy kitten care habits from the beginning. Create a loving environment for your pet and come to 9 Tel Animal Hospital — we put your kitten first.

Spaying or Neutering Your Kitten

Spaying or neutering a young cat provides several health benefits and helps control the overpopulation of cats. Neutering makes most male cats friendlier and easy to live with. Spayed females are more relaxed than cats that are not spayed. Another benefit of spaying and neutering is that it minimizes the risk of cancer of the reproductive organs and mammary glands in female cats.

  • Spaying — Spaying a female cat involves removing the uterus and ovaries, usually between four and six months of age. This is a major surgical procedure and is performed under anesthesia. Your cat is usually kept overnight, and recovery usually takes about ten days.
  • Neutering — Neutering is a medical procedure in which a male cat's testicles are removed. It's performed under anesthesia, and the small wound takes about a week to heal. The process is less complicated than spaying and is performed on a “day surgery” basis when your cat is between four and twelve months old.

Basic Health Checks for Cats

You should make an appointment for your kitten to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. You can expect the following at the first pet visit:

  • Thorough physical examination
  • Check for parasites and internal parasites
  • Initial vaccination and/or discussion about vaccinations your kitten needs
  • Consultation about whether your kitten should be spayed/neutered

Making a New Kitten Feel Comfortable

When you bring a new kitten or cat into your home, it's important to let it get acquainted with its new home and surroundings. Make sure your kitten knows where to sleep, eat, and eliminate. Your kitten may be overwhelmed in the beginning because it's not used to your home. Just give him or her time to settle in. If you have small children in your home, make sure they know your kitten is not a new toy. Provide your cat with toys that he can pretend to hunt or capture prey, as well as a scratching post, so he doesn’t scratch your furniture.

Exams and Vet Services for Geriatric Cats

Most cats are considered geriatric between the ages of eight and ten. Good nutrition, regular exercise, scheduled veterinarian appointments are all important factors in keeping your cat healthy. As your cat ages, changes will occur in their metabolism. If you pay attention to your cat’s behavior, you will detect problems easier.

Tips for Caring for an Older Cat

  • Check your cat’s mouth, eyes, and ears regularly. Watch for loose teeth, redness, swelling, or discharge.
  • Keep your pet’s sleeping area clean and warm.
  • Groom your cat often. You’ll detect any unusual sores or lumps and keep his coat healthy.
  • Make fresh water available at all times.
  • Maintain a regime of proper nutrition, exercise, and loving attention.

Common Health Issues to Look For

  • Obesity
  • Arthritis
  • Intolerance to hot and cold temperatures
